suburbs of Canberra and rental? I asked a few months ago to live / rent in Canberra. My faily moves down soon and we're still deciding on which suburb to live. We have heard that Weston Creek is an area bordered by trees with large old houses and bigger yards??? This is exactly what we want. I like the idea of living in one of the suburbs and I heard that Duffy, in particular Chapman is a beautiful area to live. Can anyone give me information on these neighborhoods? or similar? So why are so damn expensive rental??? Has anyone found it is cheaper to buy a house?
If you want more information on prices in Canberra visit this site. It will give you accommodations and shopping throughout the city.

PS There are many beautiful places around Canberra. Select an area near where you work. If you can afford it, buy a house. Still a better option.
I have an idea that I told you before. There are no "bad" neighborhoods in Canberra, some of which are somewhat more desirable than others. That said, I would like to avoid areas such as "The Floor" and the area immediately around the station. Right now, areas such as Gungahlin have traffic problems. Suburbs in the extreme north and south valleys layers and tend to have narrow lanes with houses on relatively large blocks of land smallish. As in any city anywhere, avoid low areas.
You already have a good answer for why rents are so high, I'll just add that if you remember some 500 houses were burnt in the recent fire disaster and have not all been replaced. This particularly affected the suburbs of Duffy and Chapman. Add to that the population is steadily increasing.
Another reason is that the government is very fond of high land prices that returns tax dollars and rates. Therefore, they tend to release for development in small patches that keeps land prices and, naturally, high rentals. This is true in any city in Australia, unfortunately.
Although the commute to Canberra are usually short-term parking is very short in the area of civic affairs and also in the center of Woden. Basically, if you get in the car at lunchtime in Woden and go to an appointment, your parking will be passed when you come back and you can spend 20 minutes driving around the Search another. Arriving late for work and you have the same problem. I do not see this reduction as car parks are being built with 4 and 5 floor buildings.
I therefore recommend that you only look at suburbs that are reasonably close to your work, so the place is a short bus ride, bike or on foot.
Despite the rantings of "Pedal Power" in Canberra has a good network of bike paths and hiking trails through the suburbs, mostly removed from automobile traffic. It is really worth it to get a bike and get to work if you are at a reasonable distance and is not necessary to go to ridiculous lycra shorts and shit. But to insist on mudguards on the bike to the dismay of the people bike shop.
The bus service is probably a good compared to some places, but I've used it as an exception rather than the rule as I made a point of buying close enough to walk to work. A few months later I bought a bike on a whim and have been using for about 7 minutes to get there and back, 18 minutes walk and something like 25 minutes by car, taking in the equation the fact messing around to find a parking space, traffic lights, make good parking and walking to 5 minutes of work.
I'm sorry if I went on the bike too, I'm not a bike nut as a PE.
