Rent All Of BostonCharter Schools in Boston invited to join Boston Schools System

In an unprecedented move in April, Boston schools launched an initiative to convert all the charter schools within the city during their school system as pilot schools. The move was in response to millions of dollars in lost funding annually for children attending charter schools. Change schools to pilot schools under the jurisdiction of the school of Boston, would demand future dollars, and to expand the portfolio of the Boston schools' experimental schools.

Schools in Boston began with a letter of recruitment of 550 teachers and principals in charter, signed by the Boston Teachers Union President Richard Stutman, Boston schools then Chief Operating Officer Michael Contompasis (now Acting Superintendent ), and the pilot head of the Network of Schools Dan French. It was followed by a meeting open invitation, where schools of Boston officials and union members tried to convince educators charter school benefits to make the conversion.

Charter schools were created in 1993 by state law and are under the jurisdiction of the state. There are currently 14 schools in the Charter of the City of Boston that serve approximately 4,300 students. They give parents more choice for the education of their children, while enjoying the autonomy and more freedom than traditional schools. Educators determine what and how students are taught, the length of the school day and year, and determine how to allocate budgets. Teacher salaries and benefits, however, are determined by each school, without guarantees or protections unemployment. In addition, there is no restriction on the number of overtime hours teachers can work without remuneration.

Pilot schools under the jurisdiction of the Boston schools were created in 1995 in response to competition from charter schools. Boston Schools 58,600 students, about 6,000 attend the 19 pilot schools. They have more autonomy than traditional schools, but less than charter schools, with teachers having to negotiate their freedom with the teachers' union and the schools of Boston. educators in the pilot schools, however, are guaranteed pay union between $ 42,355 and $ 81,702 per year, and the benefits and protections, including a restriction on the number of overtime hours teachers can work without remuneration. Seven schools are under new pilots by 2009.

conversion projects, schools in Boston will be a tough fight. He was greeted with skepticism by many charter school teachers, who like the flexibility and autonomy that would be lost. Conversion means a flight school to immerse themselves in the rigidity, red tape and bureaucracy, and inherited the teachers' union.

Some educators have been intrigued by the idea, but do not give him much hope. Some see it as a bold move that deserves a hearing and discussion, as with any new idea. Some would be concerned if the Boston schools were established to deal with charter schools, like New York and Indianapolis - autonomy is adopted rather than restricted.

Blasdale Spencer, executive director of the Academy of the Pacific Region and Chairman of the Association of charter schools in Massachusetts, has encouraged each charter school at least find more details. He said his school, which is currently located in an old factory complex could save $ 396,000 per year in rent - if Boston schools provide permanent facilities. Then Superintendent Thomas W. Payzant noted that the Boston schools were already struggling to find permanent facilities of their existing pilot schools.

As schools continue their recruitment Boston charter schools, the people of Boston can not wait to see what the result may bring.
